Who we are . . . what we do

New Center Council (NCC) is a nonprofit business organization dedicated to the development and management of New Center as a vibrant, diverse and economically healthy district and the northern anchor of Detroit’s Greater Downtown.

NCC’s eighty dues-paying members include key businesses and institutions such as Henry Ford Health System, Trizec, The Wellness Plan, The Farbman Group, Albert Kahn Associates, Comerica, Wayne State University, Detroit Public Schools, and the CANCAN neighborhood association.

As the pro-active leadership organization for New Center, NCC engages its members, civic leaders, and government officials in initiatives that keep this one of the region’s finest office, retail, and residential centers. The NCC focuses on four key action areas.

Clean & Safe Services
NCC maintains the public spaces in the area through litter removal, an annual flower and landscaping program, holiday lighting, banners, and tree maintenance.  The NCC works very closely with the Detroit Police Department 13th Precinct and the New Center Patrol to keep New Center one of the safest neighborhoods in Detroit.

Economic Development & Planning
NCC works closely with the City of Detroit and other agencies to plan and implement the highest quality development in New Center.  Economic development initiatives spurred by the 1997 New Center Economic Development Plan have led to $257 million of completed and pending investment in New Center since 1997.

Image-Building
Comerica TasteFest, created by NCC in 1989 to draw attention to the growing vitality of New Center, has become one of the region’s premier attractions.  The five-day festival celebrating food, music and the urban scene attracts 300,000 people annually in the days surrounding the Fourth of July.

Youth Enrichment
Last but not least, the New Center Summer Youth Program – carried out in collaboration with Fairbanks Elementary School -- provides positive educational, cultural and recreational experiences to 140 disadvantaged children each summer.
